The selection of youth workers is a matter of great importance as it involves choosing individuals who are deemed suitable to guide their specific group of young people, which in turn increases the chance of developing a trusting relationship with them.
Moreover, training youth workers is essential for developing this relationship, as training provides them with the information and strategies they need to enhance their chances of establishing good relationships with young people (according to Sipe, 1999). Parra et al. also found that limited training for youth workers is better than no training at all, as it gives youth workers a greater sense of effectiveness in engaging in activities that build effective relationships with young people.
Additionally, supervision of the relationship with young people helps ensure that both parties meet regularly and exchange any advice or information they may need.
While the mission statement for the youth work program, its philosophy, and resources will influence the extent to which program managers can commit to these processes, it is necessary to consider them when guiding best practices. Comprehensive screening is viewed as essential for stakeholders interviewed in the second phase of the research.
In general, all youth program directors have comprehensive screening processes that include several rounds of interviews, personality tests, and background checks. One youth worker noted that the comprehensive screening process is necessary not only to protect the youth and the worker but also for their proper matching and to measure the level of commitment from both parties.
One youth worker said, "I had an initial interview that lasted about an hour, then I had another interview that lasted about two hours, which was very detailed during which I underwent a psychological test that made me believe that the screening process is important to ensure that you really want to work with youth and that you are the right person for it."
In addition to measuring the level of commitment of the potential youth worker, program managers use prolonged processes to assess the extent of their motivations to become youth workers and the range of their skills, as well as their suitability to be mentors for the group of potential trainees in the program. In this regard, another program director pointed out that they screen youth workers "based on what they want to participate in." Thus, comprehensive screening processes are important to provide effective service as they protect the trainees and help ensure the selection of suitable youth workers to provide their services for the benefit of the group of trainees in the program.
If the organization has a high number of youth workers from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, they will need to select youth workers who have the motivation, skills, and overall suitability that matches the needs of their trainees from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
