The most important step during training sessions is to keep trainees more engaged and productive. The second step is to make the training beneficial. In fact, the working relationship between the trainee and the employer, characterized by greater productivity, is based on performing meaningful tasks rather than work that is limited to just carrying out tasks without development.

For nonprofit organizations, it is important to assign serious tasks to trainees that could impact the organization's success, without taking risks that might expose the organization to various problems. Don't forget that your organization has limited funding, so trainees should make great efforts to reach levels that surpass those of trainees in commercial organizations.

I do not suggest that you assign trainees to work on communication strategies within the organization, or choose a new work program, or even negotiate with donors, but you can assign them the following tasks over the course of the internship, which would help them in their future career paths.

Four tasks to achieve the effectiveness of training programs in your nonprofit organization

These four tasks will increase the effectiveness of the trainees in your nonprofit organization, with the aim of gaining experience that will benefit them in their future careers, in addition to enhancing overall productivity within your organization.

1. Social Media Posting:

Millennials are among the most skilled generations in using social media. Statistics from the

Pew Research Center reports that around 81% of individuals aged 18 to 29 use social media platforms, so Millennials are ahead in all major social media platforms, except for "LinkedIn," where most users are aged between 30 to 49 years.

Generally, trainees may possess high competency in all things related to social media, enabling them to assist you by sharing links, images, and videos; they may also help you find new ideas for your social strategies.

In this regard, Forbes magazine pointed out that social media marketing is still underutilized in the public market, and the intern can handle it. In addition to being an important strategy through which you can build a good reputation for your organization and attract new supporters, it can also yield a high return on investment of up to 92%.

In this context, Forbes reminds you that interns may not be able to oversee the organization’s social strategies, but they can assist you with everything related to social media marketing.

2. Organizing and Recording Data

Data entry into spreadsheets is not seen as an attractive task, but gaining experience in this type of program is a valuable addition to any intern's resume.

Recording data related to donors or volunteer trainees helps them identify the type of information that the organization obtains when collecting donations or building a database pertaining to volunteers.

You should remember that this task may not be suitable for all trainees; therefore, observe the trainees to understand their strengths and weaknesses, and provide a training course for this if necessary.

3. Sending Emails and Text Messages

Responding to indirect messages can be an ideal task for an intern, not only because it is a time-consuming task, but also because it serves as a way to enhance the intern's communication skills. This task includes sending messages to donors to solicit donations, making inquiry calls regarding certain issues, and contacting donors to confirm their attendance or to thank them.

Although these indirect communications are not the most appealing tasks, you can motivate trainees by giving them rewards for their efforts when their emails to donors help gather significant funds, or when they confirm the attendance of invitees to the events organized by the organization.

If you have only one intern, set goals for them, and if they achieve them, reward them. Ensure that the messages that were sent include questions that can be answered with either yes or no, and avoid sending repetitive questions all the time. Additionally, you should work within a strategy that helps the intern answer some of the questions raised by donors, especially in cases where the intern may not have an answer to the question posed.

4. Writing Posts or Creating Content for the Organization's Blog

Interns are often either university graduates or in the middle of their college journey, so they will be accustomed to writing, which makes them ideal for the task of inserting and publishing posts on the organization's blog quickly. Therefore, prepare a list of the most important topics for these posts that should be short and light, as well as keep up with all new trends.
